Full Facelift (SMAS or Two-Layer Facelift) - Houston, TX

9 Procedures ( View All )

Overview

Facelifts are among the most multifaceted, customizable cosmetic procedures available. In decades past, a facelift consisted only of lifting and tightening the skin, resulting in an unnatural, “wind-blown” look. Additionally, the results of this procedure did not last, as the skin is too thin and delicate to act as a supportive structure for the tissue. With innovations in technology and skill, surgeons are now able to lift the Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS) or underlying tissue and muscle, for better results that last. Also called the 2-layer or full facelift, the SMAS technique offers the most dramatic results. However, like with all his surgeries, triple board-certified Houston plastic surgeon, Dr. Henry Mentz focuses on creating natural, beautiful results.

Surgical Technique

Technically called a rhytidectomy, a full facelift is performed by making one incision near the hairline above the ear that continues around the ear to the back of the head, staying hidden beneath the hair. The skin is then pulled and tightened to eliminate sag and wrinkles. Excess fatty deposits and skin may be removed, and the muscle and connective tissues tightened. Sutures are used to close the incisions, and protective bandaging will be applied. Typically, a facelift can take anywhere from 2 – 4 hours, and healing can last anywhere from 2 – 4 weeks, depending on the patient.

Recovery

Proper healing after a facelift is paramount to achieving ideal results. Patients must be cautious and diligent to guarantee successful recovery. Staples and sutures are typically removed about 10 days after surgery. During the initial period of healing, expect some slight pain, swelling and minor bruising. Using cold compresses and pain management medication will alleviate these unpleasant effects. Keep your head elevated to reduce swelling.

SMAS Facelift FAQs

Soft Tissue Descent?

Along with skin looseness, the tissue layer beneath the skin is constantly pulled down by gravity as well. This can be seen in the forming of jowls along the jaw line or heavy brows and hooding of the upper lids. For decades, surgeons performing a facelift only lifted the top layer of skin to smooth out wrinkles. This was not effective as the skin is not a durable supporting structure. It also resulted in an overly taught or unnatural “windblown” appearance. With the development of the 2-layer or SMAS facelift, Dr. Mentz is able to lift the underlying tissues with the top layer of skin for natural and lasting results.

Full or Mini Facelift?

The facelift technique chosen for your surgery will depend on your concerns and goals, as well as the elasticity of your skin. Dr. Mentz will evaluate your skin during the initial consultation and then help you to understand how each type of facelift will fit with your goals. Together, you and Dr. Mentz will develop your customized facelift plan for your best results.
