Overview

Babies and young toddlers have full fat pads on the cheeks that create the typical rounded baby face. As we get older, we lose some of this baby fat to develop more flattering facial planes as cheek bones are accentuate. But as the years continue to pass, many people continue to lose this fat pad so the facial contours become sharp and the cheeks appear hollow. A mid-facelift (also called a cheek lift) removes excess skin from the cheeks, then raises the muscles and fat of the cheeks into a higher position to restore a youthful look to the face. In addition to improving the appearance of the cheeks, a mid-facelift corrects under eye bags and the nasolabial folds. For patients who want subtler results than a standard facelift, a mid-facelift performed by triple board-certified Houston plastic surgeon, Dr. Henry Mentz, can restore the appearance of the face with less invasive techniques and a shorter recovery.

Surgical Technique

A mid-facelift is usually performed as an outpatient surgery with the patient under general anesthesia at an accredited surgical facility, like the ACPS SurgiCentre. The surgeon begins with small, but deep incisions through the muscle layer. In some cases, an endoscope may be used to improve the surgeon’s view of the cheeks as they raise and adjust the fat and muscles of the mid-face until a smooth, even contour is created. Once both cheeks are in a proper, symmetrical position, the surgeon will close the incisions with sutures.

Recovery

The recovery period for a mid-facelift is usually about 1 – 2 weeks, which is much shorter than the recovery for other facelift procedures. Most patients will be able to return to work and their normal activities about 1 week after their surgery. Patients should expect some bruising and swelling after their surgery that can be improved with cold compresses and keeping their head elevated.

Cheek Lift FAQs

Causes of Sunken Cheeks?

Some people have naturally sunken cheeks due to their genetics, but others may develop sunken cheeks from age, poor nutrition, smoking, or HIV. Without youthful contours, cheeks can sag and make the whole face appear older.

With a Facelift?

In a traditional facelift, the cheeks are usually not altered much, but by combining a facelift with a cheek lift, you can improve your results and get a more natural-looking appearance. A mid facelift can still produce great results on its own, but some patients may get their best results from combining the face surgeries.

Cheek Lift Vs. Fillers?

There are many injectable wrinkle fillers, including Juvéderm Voluma, Sculptra, and Belotero, that can temporarily improve the volume and lift of the cheeks. It can be beneficial to try these fillers first to determine the look you want and then have a mid-facelift to get similar results that are longer lasting.
