Worry lines, laugh lines, smokers’ wrinkles, marionette lines: we have cute names for these creases, but they’re really not that cute. They start to appear when our we stop producing collagen and the elastin fibers in the skin lose strength and flexibility. Triple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Henry Mentz offers liquid facelifts, a nonsurgical option to diminish lines and wrinkles to give the the skin a more youthful appearance. As the first surgeon in the nation to receive triple-board certification in plastic surgery, facial and reconstructive plastic surgery, and otolaryngology (head and neck) surgery, Dr. Mentz has been at the forefront of developing innovative techniques to rejuvenate the face, including wrinkle fillers, wrinkle relaxers, fat transfers to the face, laser skin treatments, and chemical peels. Dr. Mentz will help you to evaluate your options so you can determine the method that will best help you to meet your goals.

Nonsurgical Options

  • Hyaluronic Acid Based Injectable Fillers

Hyaluronic-acid based injectable fillers such as Juvéderm XC, Juvéderm Voluma, Belotero Balance, Restylane SILK, and Restylane Lyft restore a youthful appearance to the skin by adding fullness to hollow areas and by filling in moderate to severe wrinkles. They are commonly used to fill in lines around the mouth and those that extend from the nose to the mouth. These fillers are made up of synthetic form of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring component in the skin that binds moisture and adds fullness. Their effects can last from 6 – 12 months or longer.

  • Other Injectable Fillers

Radiesse is another product used by Dr. Mentz’s staff to fill in wrinkles and add youthful volume to the face. Radiesse stimulates the production of collagen, which helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles by adding structure and firmness to the skin. Sculptra Aesthetic diminishes facial gauntness and creasing by stimulating an increase in the skin’s collagen, a key skin ingredient which gives the face volume and strength. The effects of Sculptra, which is made from poly-L lactic acid, build gradually, through a series of approximately 3 injectable treatments that are spread out over a few months. Its maximum effects are typically apparent 4 – 6 months after the first treatment. Sculptra is rising in popularity because of its relatively long-lasting benefits, which can be evident for as long as 2 years.

  • Fat Transfer

Dr. Mentz uses fat grafting to restore the fullness and soft contours that characterize a younger face. Fat grafting returns a supple, youthful look to the face by strategically rebuilding its youthful contours. The procedure restores volume to flattened cheeks and other sunken or thin areas of the face; greatly diminishes wrinkles, folds and deep creases on the face, and enhance the shape and fullness of the lips. Fat grafts usually lose 50-60% of their volume, but the fat that remains is permanent. Dr. Mentz will inject more fat than is needed to account for the fat that will be reabsorbed by the body.

  • Injectable Wrinkle Relaxers

BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport are purified proteins that soften and diminish lines around the eyes, on the forehead, between the brows and by the mouth through their muscle-inhibiting properties. The lines of these areas are caused not only by the aging process, and environmental damage, but also by repeated muscle movement made through such facial expressions as smiling and frowning. When BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport are injected into the muscles underneath these lined areas, they inhibit the muscle movement so that skin is smoothed out. Effects typically last for about 3 – 4 months in most areas of the face and 2 – 3 months around the mouth.

  • Lasers and Chemical Peels

Lasers and chemicals help to smooth and even out the skin’s appearance by removing its damaged outer layer so that a healthier new layer can come to the surface. Dr. Mentz’s MedSpa offers a wide variety of laser and and chemical peel treatments, while the stronger TCA chemical peel is physician-administered.

One big advantage of the liquid facelift over a surgical facelift is that it usually needs little to no recovery time. Patients should be able to return to their normal activities as soon as they feel able after their treatment. Some patients may have mild, temporary bruising and swelling, which will be worsened by exercise and sun exposure. Patients should avoid touching or rubbing their face and it is best to keep the head elevated for the first day after the treatment.

Liquid Facelift FAQs

Traditional Wrinkle Fillers?

Restylane, Juvéderm, and Belotero are injectable hyaluronic-acid based fillers.  They are used to fill folds and lines. The nasolabial folds, which run from the corner of the mouth to the nose, are areas that are commonly injected with these treatments. Effects of the injections last 6 – 12 months, possibly longer.

Other Wrinkle Fillers?

Wrinkle fillers Radiesse and Sculptra not only fill in lines and wrinkles, but it also adds youthful volume and stimulates the skin’s production of collagen (a component of the skin which gives it firmness and structure). Radiesse, which is comprised of calcium-based microspheres that are similar to materials found in the bone, can produce results that last for up to a year or longer. Sculptra is made with poly-L lactic acid and can last up to 2 years.

Wrinkle Relaxers?

These cosmetic injectables greatly reduce the appearance of creases between the brows, on the forehead, around the eyes and around the mouth. More recently they also have been used to decrease excessive sweating in the armpits and palms, a condition known as hyperhidrosis. These purified protein products work by inhibiting the muscle movement that leads to wrinkles. By making small injections of BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport into these muscles, their movement is diminished, along with the associated lines they produce in the skin.

Laser and Chemical Peels?

Chemical and lasers are used to even out and smooth the appearance of the skin by removal of the damaged outer layer that allows a new healthier layer to surface.  Dr. Mentz and his team offer a variety of chemical and laser peel treatments in Dr. Mentz’s Houston office.
